What Parents/Caregivers Should Do When a Student Will Be Absent

If a student will remain at home, the parent/ guardian/caregiver must do one of the following:

  1. On the day of the absence, communicate with the school in one of the following ways:  email, written note, phone call, or school specific form (if applicable). Please identify yourself as the parent/guardian/caregiver of the student. Please include the date(s) of absence(s) and the reason for absence(s),
  2. OR, when the student returns to school, send a written note with the student to give to the principal or attendance clerk.

Any communications with the school regarding a student absence should include the student’s name, the date(s) of the absence(s), the reason for the absence, the signature of a parent/caregiver (if a written note), and the date. (SFUSD Board Policy 5113)

If the parent/caregiver does not submit communication for a valid excused absence, the student will receive an Unexcused Absence.
