Arab American Contributions and Community in San Francisco and Beyond Link to this section

Arab Americans have long been part of the American story. They have contributed to every aspect of our society, including education, business, public service, science, the arts, healthcare, and community leadership. California has a strong and vibrant Arab American community, and San Francisco is home to Arab Americans who have helped shape the city’s cultural and civic life.

Diversity and Identity Within the Arab American Community Link to this section

Arab American identity is diverse and multifaceted. Arab Americans come from many different countries and regions and represent a wide range of cultural traditions. Arab Americans also include people of many faiths, languages, and lived experiences. This diversity is one of the strengths of the Arab American community and an important part of what we honor during this month.

Learning, Understanding, and Year-Round Celebration Link to this section

Arab Americans have made meaningful contributions to our shared society that we celebrate not only during April, but all year long. Arab American Heritage Month is also an opportunity to build understanding, promote respect, and encourage learning about the many ways Arab Americans have shaped our communities and country. It also serves as a time to challenge anti-Arab stereotypes and prejudices.

We encourage teachers to join us throughout April—and throughout the year—in exploring the history, culture, and contributions of Arab Americans in San Francisco and across the United States.
