Jewish Americans have been an important part of the American story. They have greatly contributed to all areas of American life and culture since our nation's earliest days. California is deeply connected to the Jewish community. The Jewish community has been part of California, and in San Francisco, since the state's earliest days of statehood.

Identity and Diversity Within the Jewish American Community Link to this section

Jewish Americans connect to their Jewish identity in many ways. This can be cultural, ethnic, religious, or by following Jewish ethics and values. Jewish Americans are racially, ethnically, socially, politically, and economically diverse. Jewish Americans have made contributions to our society and culture that we celebrate this month and all year long. As we recognize the groundbreaking accomplishments of Jewish Americans throughout history, it is also important to acknowledge the hurdles the community has faced due to antisemitism, which is the hatred of Jewish people on the basis of their identity.

Confronting Antisemitism and Supporting Year-Round Learning Link to this section

Antisemitism continues to be a critical concern today, with data indicating that the elevated, record-high levels of incidents recorded in 2024 and 2025 persisted. This included physical attacks, vandalism, harassment, and hateful comments online.  Implicit bias and antisemitic attitudes are widespread today. San Francisco shares a duty to condemn and combat antisemitism and stand with the Jewish American community against hatred in our city and country. Supporting opportunities to learn more about Jewish American history and culture and learn about the diversity of our Jewish American community helps combat hate that takes hold.

We encourage teachers to join us throughout May, and all year long, in exploring the impact that Jewish American communities have had on San Francisco and the United States.
